Apple plans to increase its production in India further. So said India’s Commerce Minister. According to him, Apple wants a quarter of its production to come from India in the long term, from the current 5 to 7 percent.

The American tech group is in the process of moving its production out of China.

The trade minister did not say when that target of 25 percent should be achieved. Apple has been assembling iPhones in India since 2017. These are assembled in the country by, among others, the Taiwanese company Foxconn.

The company is said to have plans to quadruple the workforce for its iPhone factory in southern India within two years.

India’s IT and electronics minister wrote on Twitter on Monday that the value of Apple smartphone exports from India rose to $1 billion in December.
