Microsoft is Forcing Windows 10 S Users to Stick on Browser Edge

The new Windows 10 S operating system allows you to install Chrome or Firefox, but not set as default browser. Remarkably, because the software company Microsoft was penalized for propagating its browser. But, for a million fine, as received by the European Commission in 2009, it probably does not have to be feared.

Back to start. This is how Microsoft’s news feels today. In the new Windows OS operating system, it is not possible to use a different browser as default than its own browser Edge.

In 2009, Microsoft was tricked by the European Commission because it would abuse the dominant position of Windows to split Internet Explorer browser into the stomach. Consequence: a half billion dollar fine and a default browser screen for opening a new computer.

That will not happen again, expects lawyer Arnoud Engelfriet. “Windows is no longer the dominant giant it was in times of fine. It was unusually powerful and said of that position: you will use Internet Explorer, but there’s no more.”

Microsoft’s browsers are subordinate to, for example, Google Chrome, and the strong entry of Apple’s operating system greatly reduced Microsoft’s power. “So the European Commission will not intervene if a party only offers its own browser.”

What Exactly is Annoying?
The choice of Microsoft means that for the opening of links, Microsoft’s Edge browser will always start itself. This applies, for example, when clicking a link in a pdf or an email.

You can download other browsers from the Windows application store, but you will have to start it manually.

The same goes for the search engine. By going to Google.com, Google can be used, but searching through the address bar sends your search results to Bing.

Chromebook Does the Same
Incidentally, it’s not possible for Windows 10 S, Google’s Chromebook, to install another browser. An alternative search engine can be set up.

For Windows 10 S only
This is true only for the new Windows 10 S operating system, which is a lighter, cheaper version of Windows 10. This system is primarily intended for students and only students. For all other Windows operating systems, the freedom of choice still exists.
