The G7 will hold an intercalated video-linked summit on Tuesday about the latest bombing raids on Ukraine. The German government has announced this, and President Volodimir Zelensky of Ukraine is participating.

The conversation starts at 2 p.m. The reason is a massive Russian attack with missiles reported by Kyiv on Ukrainian infrastructure for essential facilities such as energy and drinking water. As a result, power has been cut in many places.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz has emphasized that Germany and the other G7 countries show solidarity with Ukraine. French President Emmanuel Macron telephoned Zelensky and said he is extremely concerned and wants to supply more weapons. The European Union’s foreign affairs coordinator, Josep Borrell, is shocked by the attacks.

The Polish government has called them crimes against humanity. Prime Minister Mark Rutte spoke of “horrific” rocket attacks by Russia on Ukraine.

The G7 is an economic issues consultative group of Canada, Germany, France, Great Britain, Italy, Japan and the US. The EU, formerly the European Economic Community, has joined us since 1977.

It was at the beginning of 1975 a meeting in a castle near Paris where the first members talked informally about world problems. But the G7 has gained increasing weight as a Western summit dealing with political issues.
