Instagram Introduces Restriction to US Elections

Instagram is also taking measures to prevent the spread of misinformation about the US presidential election.

The social media platform, owned by Facebook, is temporarily removing the “Recent” tab for US users.

“We are doing this to reduce the real-time spread of potentially harmful content that could emerge around the election,” Instagram said in a statement on the measure.

Under “Recent” posts with the same hashtag are arranged chronologically, and individual posts are automatically highlighted. Experts previously warned that misinformation could spread quickly on Instagram that way.

Social media companies are under increasing pressure to take steps to suppress misleading information and inflammatory reports surrounding the elections.

For example, Twitter announced earlier this month that it would remove tweets calling on people to interfere in the American election process, including through violence.

Facebook recently stated that it had rejected 2.2 million ads and 120,000 messages because they were supposed to have the aim of limiting election turnout.
