Fortnite Out of China

Epic Games, maker of the popular game Fortnite, is discontinuing the Chinese version of the game. The company itself announced this.

Fortnite launched a while ago as a test in China, and the Chinese tech giant Tencent also has a stake in Epic Games itself. So it’s not entirely clear why Epic Games is now discontinuing the game in China. However, the gaming industry in the country has indeed been subject to strict legislation in recent months by the Communist Party.

These include restrictions that determine that young people are allowed to play fewer hours a day. But also because of restrictions in so-called ‘microtransactions’, with which these games earn most of their money.

Epic Games had released a separate Chinese version of Fortnite, with some tweaks to game design and gameplay to comply with local laws. Unfortunately, the game’s servers will close on November 15 in China, no longer allowing new players.
