American news channel CNN is cutting 6 percent of its jobs, causing approximately 200 employees to lose jobs.
The intervention in the workforce is part of a change of course in which CNN wants to focus more on streaming and a digital audience instead of cable television.
Parent company Warner Bros. Discovery is simultaneously investing 70 million dollars to make the turnaround possible, according to a memo to staff quoted by Bloomberg news agency. With that money, CNN wants to hire approximately one hundred new employees to work on the news organization’s digital offering.
Many news channels in the United States struggle with declining television viewing figures. CNN hopes to attract viewers for a streaming service with news broadcasts. The company is also working on a subscription model in which news must be more adapted to consumers’ viewing habits.
