British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been released from the hospital in London, where he spent a week in intensive care for the lung disease caused by the new coronavirus.

He retreats to the official residence of the Prime Minister, Checkers, to recover further. He will not immediately return to work.

The Prime Minister has delegated his duties to Secretary of State Dominic Raab.

Johnson had praised doctors and nurses earlier today for the “exemplary” care he received during his coronavirus treatment, British media report. “I owe my life to them. I can’t thank them enough,” said Johnson.

Friends of the Prime Minister revealed in the MailOnline that he was close to death while fighting the coronavirus in the hospital.

At one point, the situation was so severe that ministers, officials and his friends prayed for him.

The prime minister spent his seventh night at St Thomas’ hospital in London after being admitted last Sunday, ten days after testing positive for the coronavirus.
