May Begins Brexit Debate: Two Important Players Risk Suspension

May Begins Brexit Debate: Two Important Players Risk Suspension. British Prime Minister Theresa May is threatening to make a false start in the big Brexit debate that begins this afternoon.

Members of the House of Representatives are likely to adopt a motion stating that the government has ‘disparaged’ parliament by not publishing the legal advice about its agreement with Brussels.

If the proposal is passed, it may lead to the suspension of one or two members of the government, who can not vote on crucial decisions in that case.

For weeks the Labor opposition has asked for the full text of the advice given by the country’s most crucial lawyer, Geoffrey Cox, to the government.

Cox is an attorney general, a function comparable to that of the Belgian Attorney General. He considers a publication of the full advice “not in the national interest”, but summed up the Monday in the House of Commons.
