After Hurricane in US, Name Ida is No Longer Used in Storms

After the devastating and deadly Hurricane Ida that hit the United States last year, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has decided not to use the name for future storms.

Ida was the worst storm of 2021 in the US.

The name Ida might bring back too painful memories. The WMO, therefore, replaces the name, Imani.

Ida made landfall off the southern state of Louisiana in August. From there, the hurricane moved through the US towards New York. There were major floods, and large parts of the country were without power. 87 people were killed, and the damage was about $65 billion.

The WMO named storms and hurricanes to make them easier to identify in warnings and the news. The names will be listed and assigned to storms in alphabetical order.

The WMO reuses the list every six years unless names are removed, as is now the case with Ida. Earlier, 94 names were removed from the list because the storms were too severe.
