Russia and Ukraine will resume peace negotiations in Turkey on Monday. “I don’t think there will be a breakthrough on the key issues,” said Interior Ministry adviser Vadim Denisenko.
Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky welcomed the resumption of talks and said the parties should be ready to compromise on the most sensitive issues.
The two sides have not met in person for weeks but will hold talks in Istanbul for three days from Monday. Several rounds of talks have so far failed to bring an end to the war that erupted after the Russian invasion.
According to Zelensky, about 20,000 people have been killed, 10 million have fled their homes, and Ukrainian cities are still being bombed despite Russian military losses.
About 170,000 civilians are surrounded by Russian troops in the southern port city of Mariupol. In the city, the situation for residents is virtually untenable, with shortages of food, water and medicines. The Ukrainian authorities again failed to immediately help civilians in need to get out of the heavily besieged city safely on Sunday.
